Boutique brand MAN of the SEA has expanded its portfolio of bronze timepieces with the launch of the Smooth Seas, a nautical-themed watch that combines hand-cast casework, a Swiss automatic movement and a miniature painted dial.
Custom bronze casework
The Smooth Seas is built around a bronze case produced through an ancient lost-wax casting process. Founder Don Weismantel, widely known in enthusiast circles as “Peg Leg Don,” applies the technique to every model in the company’s lineup. The 48 mm bezel and cushion-shaped mid-case display ornate scrolls reminiscent of traditional picture frames, while anchor motifs reinforce the maritime concept. Because bronze develops an individual patina, each watch is expected to age differently once exposed to air and moisture.
Bronze has grown popular in contemporary watchmaking for its warm tone and evolving surface. The alloy’s historical use in cannons, maritime fittings and decorative objects influenced Weismantel’s decision to employ it exclusively. Background on the material’s properties can be found through the Metallurgy entry on bronze.
Hand-painted seascape dial
A hand-painted dial distinguishes the Smooth Seas from factory-produced alternatives. The artwork depicts a sailing ship navigating calm water under an open sky, reinforcing the model’s oceanic identity. Applied hour markers maintain legibility, and a wide set of luminescent hands indicate hours, minutes and central seconds.
